What causes back pain?

Back pain is widespread and variable. You might have back pain from an acute injury or repetitive motions, or it could stem from a degenerative condition. Some of the most prevalent cause of back pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Herniated discs

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Compression fractures

  • Bone spurs

  • Scoliosis

  • Osteoporosis

  • Tumors

  • Muscle and connective tissue injuries

  • Failed back surgery

Many factors contribute to back pain, including your age, weight, and profession. As you age, your muscles and connective tissue become drier and less flexible, and consequently more vulnerable to injury. If you’re overweight or obese, your back is under more stress because it has to support a greater weight. Both sedentary jobs and physically demanding jobs can increase your risk of back pain, although in different ways.

When should I talk to Dr. Weisbein about back pain?

Back pain often goes away after a couple of days of at-home treatments such as rest, over-the-counter pain medication, and ice packs. If your pain lasts longer or gets worse, you should make an appointment to talk to Dr. Weisbein about your pain.
